Board members defended proposed pay adjustments as a way to remain competitive and retain staff.
A committee member (speaker 10) said the board compared Hague's salaries with other towns in Warren County and used collected data to set marketable rates. The chair added that annual budget figures reflect hourly pay multiplied by weeks worked plus overtime and argued lower hourly rates would make it hard to retain skilled employees.
"We need to pay people a rate at which we can keep them here working at the town of Hague," the chair said, stressing that the adjustments were made with an eye toward recruitment and retention. Board members said they also considered county hiring practices and union wage structures when making comparisons.
