City, surety and new contractor to complete Commercial Avenue project; lane closures expected

Public works staff updated the board on ongoing infrastructure work and the Commercial Avenue takeover agreement, telling aldermen that the city’s surety has solicited bids and a new contractor is expected to begin soon to finish the project after the previous contractor defaulted.
Public works director Chuck said the contractor has laid over 2,000 feet of water main and is "almost up out of the hole" where work has been extensive. He told the council the bonding company solicited new contractor bids and that Selby Construction (from Kearny) has been selected as their recommendation; the project is estimated to take 68 calendar days, weather permitting, and will include intermittent northbound lane closures near Hospital Drive. Council approved the associated takeover agreement by voice vote later in the meeting.
Chuck and staff emphasized coordination with FHWA because of federal highway funds tied to the project and said the surety will cover the bid cost difference created by the previous contractor default. The city expects to coordinate school-district access and flag traffic as needed during fill and retaining-wall work.
