Smithville aldermen adopt FY2026 operating budget

The Smithville Board of Aldermen voted to adopt the city’s fiscal year 2026 operating budget on second reading, approving ordinance 3081-25 after a formal roll call.
Alderman Atkins moved approval of the budget and the clerk recorded a unanimous roll call. City administrator Miss Wagner read the ordinance language on the floor: "An ordinance adopting the fiscal year 20 26 annual operating budget for the city of Smithville, Missouri in authorizing the expenditures for funds for municipal services." Council members said the vote will allow administrative steps tied to the budget, including a planned change to the employee retirement system. Miss Wagner told the board that, "so long as the budget is approved tonight, we will post the information with regard to the change to employee retirement system" and that action on that change is scheduled for Dec. 16 and would take effect after Jan. 1.
Adoption of the ordinance completes the formal spending plan for municipal services for the coming year and clears the way for staff to post and implement budget-linked items identified by administration. The council recorded the budget passage with the city clerk’s roll call and moved on to subsequent agenda items.
