The Town of Alexandria held a work session on the proposed Sportsplex renovation where the project presenter reviewed revised floor plans and scope, saying the overall size and general scope remain consistent with earlier drawings. The presenter described a 5,000-square-foot north addition with a new entrance vestibule and an ADA lift that would raise patrons roughly 4 feet to rink level.
"This is a 5,000 square foot addition, new entrance vestibule off of the parking lot with an ADA lift inside that vestibule," the Presenter said, summarizing the core addition concept. He also described a lobby area of about 902 square feet that could seat 40 to 50 people depending on layout, and noted interior renovations would largely replace existing bathrooms, concessions and bleachers in kind while expanding spectator seating capacity by roughly 2.5–3 times.
The Presenter gave a preliminary cost estimate for the base scope: "that's that $6,300,000 to get there is what we're currently estimating." He emphasized that alternates—such as scoreboard/AV replacement, lighting upgrades, and an HVAC replacement—would be designed as optional bid items so the town could pursue them if grant funding, competitive bids, or later decisions permit.
Town leaders asked practical questions about plumbing, utility access and how much of the existing infrastructure could be reused; the Presenter warned buried services under the slab are sometimes difficult to locate and that openings may reveal the need for replacement or rerouting. He recommended the three-part base bid (addition, exterior alterations, interior alterations) to give the town clearer per-scope pricing and to make alternates shovel-ready should funding allow.
The meeting closed with agreement to advance contract drafting and design preparations so the town can be bid-ready in the fall if it chooses to proceed. The Presenter committed to producing a draft owner-architect agreement and assembling the engineering team for full design.
