Gorge Commission staff urge clarity on rebuilding after Rowena, Verdelin fires; Sept. 9 session to review rules

Christina, a Commission staff member, told the communications committee the agency has been active since the June Rowena and Verdelin fires, issuing fact sheets and FAQs and meeting with county emergency responders and affected landowners.
"We do actually allow metal roofs in the National Scenic Area as long as they're dark," Christina said, stressing that the fact sheets aim to correct widespread misinformation about what rebuilding requires. She said staff have been coordinating with Wasco County and that Bryce and Mackenzie, two planners, are assisting homeowners through the permitting process. Several applications have already been submitted, she added.
Chair Amy Weisfeld and commissioners agreed to devote the Sept. 9 afternoon session to reviewing rules that govern rebuilding after disasters to identify any provisions that present barriers to recovery. Connie, who fields constituent calls for the Commission, said she is directing Rowena-fire callers to Wasco County or to planners when the Commission can help. The committee did not adopt any rule changes at the meeting; it scheduled further work and a dedicated legislative outreach session in coming weeks.
