Resident urges pause on library funding until books have age ratings

Carla Dieter, a Brookings resident of more than 40 years, urged the commission during public comment to pause funding for the public library until a national book-rating system is adopted. She told the board the ratings would let "parents and others, grandparents, be able to see what that rating is and, be able to make that decision."
A second commenter, Jeff Struy, supported Dieter and described a multi-year effort reviewing hundreds of titles and contacting school districts and legislators. Struy said they "covered virtually every school district of this state" in their review and urged commissioners to withhold funding until printed and digital materials carry age or content ratings.
