Board names new community centers and civic center, honors late Commissioner Maurice Perkins

County Attorney Morrison read a resolution naming the new community center on the Douglas Center site. "The community center located on the grounds of the Douglas Center in Douglas Park shall be known as the Maurice E. Perkins Community Center," Morrison said as he read the resolution. Commissioner Mobley moved to adopt the resolution; Commissioner Land seconded. The board voted 4‑0 to adopt the Perkins naming with Commissioner Fleming recorded as not voting on that item. The board also approved a resolution naming the District 5 Sports and Community Center and another resolution naming the Jefferson Smith Civic Center; those motions passed 5‑0.
Family members and colleagues spoke at the meeting; one family member delivered remarks about Perkins' faith and community service. The resolutions will become effective on passage and will be reflected on county property records and signage plans.
