The Jerseyville City Council voted to rezone 313 S. June Street from R-2 to B-3 at the March 18 meeting to allow an adult education, training and work center. Comm. John Miles moved the recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Board on behalf of the Illinois Valley Economic Development Corporation and D&S Storage LLC (property owners David and Stacy Loellke); Comm. Anthony Steckel seconded. Comm. Steve Pohlman abstained from the vote, citing a conflict of interest; the remaining council members voted aye and the motion carried.
Several nearby residents spoke at the meeting opposed to the proposed project. For the record, Kevin Ward and Denise Hunter raised concerns about additional traffic and their desire to keep the area residential; supporters including Brenda Pacini and representatives from Illinois Valley Economic Development Corporation (Shelley Snider and Shelley Eisler) said the facility would provide needed services and be an asset to those it serves. Mayor Kevin Stork and several commissioners noted the facility’s appearance and potential traffic could be mitigated by signage or sidewalks.
