Trappe council votes to send letter supporting Talbot County accommodations tax increase

Trappe’s Town Council voted Dec. 4 to send a letter supporting Talbot County’s proposed increase in the accommodations tax from 4% to 6% after a presentation from a county representative.
Cassandra Vanhooser of Talbot County presented the county’s accommodations tax code and told the council the county is considering increasing the rate to 6% and remits towns their share after a 5% service fee. After the presentation, Commissioner Water Chase moved to send a letter of support; Commissioner Rose Potter seconded. The motion passed with Commissioner Jeremy Newnam abstaining and Commissioners Michael Sullivan, President Schmidt, Potter and Chase voting yes.
The council’s action is a request to the county indicating municipal support; the council did not adopt a local ordinance or change any town tax rate. Vanhooser’s presentation provided the committee with the county code and the procedural outline for how the tax is collected and distributed.
