Trappe to request state approval to accept Lakeside treated effluent into town lagoon

The Town of Trappe on Aug. 7 voted to ask the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to approve Lakeside Wastewater Treatment Plant sending treated effluent to Trappe’s lagoon rather than trucking it to Hurlock.
Attorney Lyndsey Ryan explained Lakeside is in its start-up phase and currently unable to spray discharge; Lakeside asked Trappe to accept the treated effluent. Staff and consultants (GMB and Superintendent Steve Callahan) recommended accepting effluent into the Town’s lagoon and maintaining the inflow rate to avoid issues from a sudden influx. The council moved to send a letter to MDE requesting the necessary approval; the motion, made by Commissioner Michael Sullivan and seconded by Commissioner Walter Chase, passed unanimously.

While the council approved sending the request, any acceptance requires MDE approval of the process (direct lagoon acceptance or via Lakeside pumping station to the Trappe plant).
