State Fire Marshal: bus-barn-to-weight-room conversion requires state plan review, board told

Board members continued a multi-meeting discussion July 20, 2026, about converting the district’s old bus barn into a weight room. Kirk contacted the State Fire Marshal, who responded that converting a bus barn to a weight room constitutes a change in occupancy and requires submission of plans through the Iowa plan-review portal. The Marshal’s guidance noted that fire-alarm and sprinkler plans must be submitted separately by the licensed contractor or engineer, and identified required items that may include fire monitoring, strobes, pull stations, emergency lights, additional exit doors, and fire extinguishers.
Superintendent Tony Ryan presented the Marshal’s email response to the board and asked for discussion; the board agreed to continue reviewing costs and code requirements alongside the district’s five-year facilities planning. Trustees discussed the possible need for additional exits and equipment and noted that separate contractor submittals would be required for alarm or sprinkler work.
The exchange did not include a motion to proceed with construction; the district will need to prepare plans and submit them to the State for approval before converting the space.
