Commission proclaims Feb. 6 as Optimist Day, honors local clubs

The board adopted a proclamation recognizing Feb. 6, 2025 as Optimist Day in Sedgwick County to honor local Optimist Club volunteers who serve youth. Commissioner Howe read the proclamation, noting Optimist International’s global membership and local clubs in Wichita Northeast, Wichita North, Wichita West, Mulvane and Derby. Representatives from the Kansas district—Judy Morris and Derby Club members including Zoe Lang—accepted the proclamation and briefly described club activities.
"Optimist clubs... have been serving the area since 1953," Judy Morris said, and Zoe Lang, a Derby Optimist Club member, described her volunteer work on social media and tech support for the club’s outreach. Commissioners invited attendees to pose for a group photo and congratulated the volunteers on the recognition.
The proclamation was adopted by unanimous roll call and the board recessed briefly to take photos.
