Community center nears completion; splash pad system upgraded and elk statue to be relocated

Parks staff updated the board on several ongoing facilities projects. Ray said the community center construction is near completion: framing and drywall work are mostly finished, bathroom plumbing and inspections are complete, and interior storefront glazing, electrical and HVAC work are scheduled this week. The city expects the community center to be ready to host the July council meeting.
On the splash pad at Elkridge, staff explained upgrades to improve safety and reliability: replacing an aging UV disinfection system, switching from liquid muriatic acid to bisulfate pucks and moving to chlorine pucks to reduce harsh chemical handling and equipment corrosion. "We're going with the chlorine pucks which both have a much higher safety rating and they're more effective," staff said.
The board also received an update on the elk statue that has experienced repeated damage. Engineers cleared a plan to relocate the statue to a roundabout in Mira Vista (the Elk Bridal area) with a solar light and new foundation; staff said moving the piece should reduce vandalism and that foundation work will begin once site conditions permit.
