Parks staff said the city will bring a wildfire mitigation implementation plan to the June 9 council meeting that proposes about 70 acres of mitigation work in 2026, including mechanical thinning and hand treatments to maintain prior work. "So about 70 acres is what we're looking at for 2026," staff said when describing the planned acreage and maintenance schedule.
Staff emphasized mitigation is a distinct budget line, separate from routine open‑space maintenance: while some acreage transfers from metro districts will increase areas the city maintains, wildfire mitigation will be authorized and funded through the separate mitigation plan brought to council. Staff said some work will be machine assisted and much will be hand cutting to maintain prior treated areas, and they plan to update the wildfire implementation plan to identify additional treatment areas on the East Side of I‑25.
