Local resident urges Powhatan to seek riverfront land from future solar installations for park expansion

During the public-comment period resident Carl Schwendeman proposed that the county use upcoming private developments as an opportunity to expand public park land along the Appomattox River. Schwendeman suggested that when a solar farm is required to provide offsets for lost trees and open space, Powhatan County could request acquisition of adjacent riverfront acreage for Fighting Creek Park, including a 100-foot buffer and a trail that would link park trails to the river.
Schwendeman also asked staff and commissioners to consider requiring a Genito Road access rather than the currently proposed Rocky Ford Road access for large developments in the area, arguing Genito Road would be safer. The commission did not act on Schwendeman's suggestion during the meeting but the idea was recorded in the public-comment record for consideration during future project negotiations.
