Notus council sends letter to Canyon County expressing water, traffic concerns about proposed development

Notus officials reviewed a Canyon County application for a conditional rezone and comp-plan map amendment covering development near Purple Sage and Conway Road. Chris Grooms, chair of the Notus Planning & Zoning Commission, told the council the proposal shows two phases: nine houses in the first phase and 14 in a second phase, each relying on individual septic systems and wells.
Grooms said the planning commission’s concerns include potential impacts to the local aquifer and irrigation supplies, and increased traffic on Purple Sage, Conway and Notus roads. Mayor David Porterfield suggested lowering the speed limit on Purple Sage near the Conway Road intersection to 35 mph because of limited sight distance. The council voted unanimously to send a letter outlining these concerns to Canyon County so the issues appear in the county’s hearing packet; the county requested a city response by Oct. 4.
The city’s letter will state the planning commission’s objections and suggested mitigation measures; council action at this meeting was limited to approving that letter for submission to county staff.
