Board agrees to split $40,000 overrun on Sandstone Junction Trail with city

Sandstone administrator Kathy George asked Pine County to split a $40,000 project overrun after a contractor used 380 additional tons of bituminous; the board approved a county contribution (about $20,000) from the parks fund to complete the project.
Kathy George, Sandstone city administrator, told commissioners the Sandstone Junction Trail repair project had been completed but required more bituminous than bidders estimated. "The additional cost on the project was $45,006.25," George said, and explained the contractor agreed to absorb roughly $5,006.25 of that overrun but that an additional roughly $40,000 remained.
George asked Pine County to split the remaining overrun with the city ($20,000 county / $20,000 city). Commissioners noted the project has already been used by the public and that the city would continue maintenance; a county commissioner said the parks fund has been created specifically to help pay for such work. The board moved, seconded and approved the county contribution from the parks fund and thanked city staff; no further amendments were made during the motion.
A commissioner also asked that trail usage be monitored going forward; county staff said the Northeast Minnesota Transportation Alliance has a trail counter available that will be used to collect usage data.
