Avon to present canopy analysis to City Council and pursue street-tree inventory

Commissioner Mary Berges announced that on Monday, May 18, at the City Council Work Session, student members Collin O'Donnell and consultant Leo Wible, along with Chair Richard Varga, will present the tree canopy analysis previously shared with the Commission.
Chair Varga said he and Mr. O'Donnell are developing an approach for a similar street-tree inventory modeled on work in Chagrin Falls, aiming to catalogue tree species and sizes in the tree lawn and to measure tree-lawn widths to inform species selection for future plantings. He expressed caution about the City's existing recommendation list that includes oak trees for tree lawns, noting while oaks provide longevity and carbon sequestration, their ultimate size can create conflicts in residential settings. He cited a historical example in Bay Village where silver maples planted in tree lawns in 1954 "ultimately caused structural damage to several homes."
The inventory approach will prioritize species identification and tree-lawn-width measurements to guide future planting lists; commissioners were encouraged to participate and support the May 18 presentation.
