Columbia BOE approves up to $40,000 to clean school well tank and caps filtration spending at $50,000

The Columbia Board of Education unanimously approved two measures on June 15 to address PFAS concerns at Porter school.
Superintendent Barbara Wilson told the board that ‘‘the well water tank lining will not exceed $40,000’’ and that the base cleaning price is $30,000 with up to $10,000 more for a steel lining to extend tank life. The board voted 6–0 to approve up to $40,000 for cleaning and lining the tank (motion by Susan Spiggle; second by Paul Zator).
Wilson said Aqua Pump quoted a range of ‘‘$51,000 to $56,000’’ to install a water filtration system and enable remote pump control from the new filter building. The board moved, seconded and approved a separate motion capping the filtration system at $50,000; the motion carried 6–0.
Board members and staff noted state and regional public-health involvement: Wilson said the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Eastern Highlands Health District are ‘‘highly involved’’ and have approved the plan. The board discussion flagged that the board’s approved cap ($50,000) is below the vendor’s highest estimate, and members asked the town to coordinate procurement and potential cost-sharing.
The board recorded both votes in the meeting minutes as passed 6–0. The superintendent estimated the filtration installation would be completed by mid-July, pending contractor scheduling and continued clearance from health officials.
