The Tazewell Town Council approved a $5,000 sponsorship to the festival organizers after discussion about prior attendance estimates, marketing spend and impacts on downtown businesses.
A council member (S9) moved to provide $5,000 from a town fund to help the organizers; after discussion the motion was seconded and put to a roll-call vote. One council member (S8) announced a conflict of interest and disqualified themself under Virginia code, stating they are a board member of the nonprofit and therefore recusing from votes, discussion and voting on the item. In the transcript the mayor then called the roll and announced the motion carried.
Organizers had initially requested $15,000 to expand advertising and double attendance; they told the council they could accept lesser amounts and would pursue additional sponsors. Council discussion focused on ensuring restaurant access during the festival, past crowd-count methods and the ability to staff closures without excessive overtime. Council members and organizers noted the festival brings revenue to the town and supports downtown businesses.
"I would make the motion to do 5,000 this go around to help you," said the council member who moved the motion (S9). The recusing council member (S8) read aloud the relevant Virginia code sections and announced their disqualification before the vote: "I am hereby disqualifying myself from votes discussing and or voting on the subject transaction."
