Architectural board recommends Westerly Elementary exterior updates

The Bay Village Architectural Board of Review reviewed proposed exterior renovations at Westerly Elementary School on April 22 and recommended approval of the design as presented. Paul Romanek of GPD, the project's lead architect, described the work as primarily window replacement with secured vestibules and a small canopy projecting roughly eight feet to the south.

Romanek said the base bid replaces perimeter windows with dark-bronze aluminum storefront frames and installs tilt-only micro blinds within the new glazing. "I'm Paul Romanek with GPD. I'm the lead architect on the project," he told the board while walking through drawings. He confirmed there is no masonry work, that insulated metal panels will form the lower spandrel and that a small existing wooden sign would be relocated rather than removed.

Board members questioned drainage, frost slabs at entry doors and finish coordination. The architect said planters and benches will be added under the canopy and that form-lined concrete will be used for stairs and planters. A motion to approve the Westerly modifications as submitted passed on a roll-call vote.
