County health officer reports first human West Nile case for the year; no local measles or cyclosporiasis cases

Simon Hall, Madera County public health officer, updated supervisors on vector-borne and communicable disease activity at the Aug. 4 meeting.
"The 1st is about a week or 2 ago, we announced that it was this year's 1st human case of West Nile virus was diagnosed," Hall told the board, and he urged residents to use mosquito repellent, remove standing water from yards and containers, and take other preventive measures. Hall said mosquito infection activity is earlier this season and increasing faster than in prior years.
On cyclosporiasis, Hall said there are currently no cases in Madera County and that rumors were traced to a misunderstanding of a gastroenteritis report. He also addressed a monitored exposure to people who may have been exposed to measles in Arizona: "Today, there's nobody with symptoms. There are no cases," Hall said, and he added that wastewater testing shows no measles signal in the county.
Hall offered to answer questions and emphasized public-health monitoring and outreach resources are available on the county and vector-control websites.
