Commission approves grants for sheriff training simulator, senior center renovations and fire-station water system

The board approved a series of grant agreements: ~ $100,000 for a firearms/use-of-force training simulator for the sheriff's office (NM DPS SCIP), $112,000 and $105,000 for Estancia and Mountainair senior center renovations (NM Dept. of Aging), and $250,000 from NMED for McIntosh Fire Station water collection and suppression upgrades to allow 24/7 staffing.
The Commission approved multiple grant actions on Jan. 28. Grants Administrator Jody Cornwell described an NM DPS State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) grant of approximately $100,000 intended to purchase a firearms training and use-of-force simulator for the Torrance County Sheriff's Office; the grant requires no local match and has an 18-month term.
Cornwell also presented two Department of Aging and Long-Term Services grants: $112,000 for Estancia Senior Center renovations (parking lot repaving, restucco) and $105,000 for Mountainair Senior Center (HVAC, parking, sidewalk). Separately, a New Mexico Environment Department grant of $250,000 was approved to plan, design, construct and equip water collection and storage and fire suppression systems for the McIntosh Fire Station, enabling 24/7 staffing. Motions to approve each agreement passed by roll call with Commissioners Schwebach and McCall voting yes and Commissioner Jaramillo absent.
