Toms River proposes 'Future Teacher Academy' to cultivate local educators

District staff proposed a Future Teacher Academy to create a pipeline of local educators by offering students early classroom observation, mentorship and a three‑course pathway that could include dual‑enrollment credits and Perkins CTE options.
"This academy is designed to inspire students to enter the education profession while building long term sustainable pipeline of Toms River Regional Schools, future educators here in our district," presenter Adrienne Gold (Speaker 8) said. Gold told the board the program would include a future educator club in each high school, classroom observations as early as freshman year, a senior practicum and partnerships with local colleges and professional organizations.
Board members asked whether other districts in Ocean County run similar programs and whether the district could pilot the academy next year. Presenters said the freshman club model would keep first‑year costs low and that, if interest and budget lines allow, the program could scale to multiple buildings.
