County to host MDA-supported pesticide-container grinding program; MOU and site work discussed

Daniels County reviewed a draft MOU and site plan for a pesticide-container grinding program funded by the Montana Department of Agriculture (MDA). The program will accept rinsed HDPE #2 pesticide jugs (labels and caps removed) for grinding in a containerized granulator.
A project lead explained that the containerized grinder is expected to be ready in late March and that the county's responsibilities include pouring a concrete slab and installing utilities (possible 3-phase power). "It is now our county's responsibility to handle finding a contractor to help with those highlighted things on the front there. We have to have a concrete slab and then install it if a utility line," the lead said. The MDA will reimburse initial infrastructure costs in many cases, the lead said, and the operator (Carly Davis) would staff the work once or twice a week depending on season.
Commissioners discussed siting the unit near the solid-waste shop and using existing huts or prefab sheds to limit costs; one participant estimated site work in the low-thousands to tens of thousands (examples in the discussion ranged from a few thousand dollars to higher estimates depending on work scope). The program is intended to serve regional needs and will require contracts for contractors and a clarified bidding process for the county.
