Senate requires districts to excuse student absences for school-sponsored activities

Senator Evans introduced Senate File 2219 and explained Senate Amendment 5165, a strike-after amendment that the sponsor read aloud. The amendment requires school districts to grant excused absences when a student is absent because of participation in a school-sponsored activity, program, competition or project, and to allow the student to make up classwork missed as a result of that absence. "The bill requires all school districts to grant and exempt absence when a student is absent from school because of the student's involvement in a school sponsored activity, program, competition, or project," Senator Evans said.
Senator Driscoll urged support, recounting past attempts and the bill's role in giving students hands-on experiences. The Senate adopted the amendment, concurred and passed Senate File 2219; the chair announced the bill passed with a constitutional majority.
