In a joint meeting with city leaders on Nov. 17, Daniels County commissioners approved the appointment of Jeremy Jones as the at-large member of a newly formed Public Safety Commission.
Morgan Huttfeld, city mayor, explained the joint request and asked for the appointment: "I am requesting, in the open meeting of the city and the county that Jeremy Jones be appointed to that position." Commissioner (speaker 2) moved to approve the county appointment and Logan Olson, county attorney, seconded; the motion was approved with three ayes recorded.
Commissioners and city officials said they will hold the commission's first meeting within 60 days as required by statute and that staff will distribute copies of the relevant state statutes and documents that define the panel's authority. Morgan Huttfeld said she would bring "copies of all the pertinent statutes, the documents that both the city and the county have passed, that lay out why we exist." The commission's scope, as discussed, focuses on oversight and coordination with the sheriff's department.
The panel will be sworn in at the first meeting; city and county officials agreed the mayor would administer the oath at an upcoming meeting. The county and city representatives also discussed meeting logistics and whether the commission will separately report to both bodies on a monthly basis.
