Resident alerts commission to $4,800 invoice scam targeting Building & Planning Department

Janeal Mathews-Newton told the White Pine County Regional Planning Commission on April 16 that she received an invoice purporting to be from the Building and Planning Department demanding payment of $4,800. "This is a felony," she told the commission, saying the paperwork included department logos and wiring instructions.
Clerk Jennifer Drew-Lesher said the county has begun adding a disclaimer to meeting agendas warning residents about fraudulent invoices and urging them to contact the Building Department or the Sheriff's Office rather than wiring money. The transcribed invoice included an "Invoice Number: 3450737552150" and a line showing "Total Amount Due: $4,800.00," with breakdowns for application review, zoning assessment, legal and administrative fees, and public notification.
Mathews-Newton said Building Department staff told her the invoice was not genuine. Drew-Lesher said meeting materials will continue to include contact information and a notice to report suspected scams to law enforcement. The county clerk also noted an audio copy of the meeting is available on request.
