Director of Finance and Operations Karen Asetta told the Facilities Subcommittee she will release an RFP for the district's transportation contract within two weeks and will ask vendors to describe any experience with affordable electric-bus deployment. She noted that under Connecticut Public Act 22-25 Region 17 is in a subset of towns required to have 100% zero-emission buses by Jan. 1, 2030. There are lobbying efforts to align the statewide mandate to Jan. 1, 2040.
Asetta said recent bid results show electric buses cost about 40% more per day than diesel buses. The RFP will ask respondents to explain strategies for affordable implementation; the committee discussed the budgetary implications and the need to evaluate vendor experience with electric fleets.
