The Taylorville City Council voted to adopt an ordinance adding Chapter 7A to the city code to prohibit kratom in both its natural and synthetic forms. Council debate focused on whether to restrict only synthetic derivatives or to impose a total ban; staff explained the draft as written covers both and noted a potential legal challenge.
Rocky (city staff) told the council, “So I think it does cover synthetic kratom,” when asked whether the draft applied to synthetic products as well as natural kratom. After debate and a roll-call vote, the ordinance passed 6–3; Mayor Bruce Barry also voted in favor. Opponents on the council asked whether the city should first limit the ban to synthetics, but the motion on the floor enacted a full prohibition.
