Harvey County issues RFP for jail medical services as current provider ends contract

Harvey County officials told commissioners Sept. 16 that the county has issued a Request for Proposals for medical services at the Harvey County Detention Center in Newton after the existing vendor notified the jail it will terminate its contract Oct. 31.
Jail Captain Brian Huntley said the RFP is being distributed to identify a local provider. The solicitation requires a correction‑experienced medical vendor, professional liability insurance, and staffing that includes a licensed provider (APRN or higher) on site for an agreed sick‑call clinic (minimum 2½ hours weekly) and telephone availability seven days a week. The RFP also directs vendors to coordinate a transition with the detention captain and to make allowances for inmate medical records, TB testing and staff training (CPR, first aid and mental‑health awareness). Proposals were due Oct. 10 and the county listed a target start date for a new contract of Feb. 1, 2026.
The RFP document spells out insurance, indemnity and contract standards the county will require of a selected contractor and asks firms to detail staffing, pricing and continuity plans. County officials said no provider has been selected yet and that the procurement will proceed through the commission and contract approval processes.
