Public Works reports bridge and road updates: Harnesh Bridge one lane, Hume Road closure continues

County Engineer Dean Cornelison and Public Works Director Mark Storey updated the Board on several transportation issues July 20. Mark Storey reported that Harnesh Bridge, similar to Kerry Miller Bridge, is down to one lane for traffic due to rotting wood; it is one of two remaining wood bridges on a paved county road. The condition prompted lane restrictions to preserve safety.
Cornelison said Hume Road remained closed and that the Whitman County Sheriff's Department has been patrolling and issuing misdemeanor tickets for violations. Staff expect that once reopened — approximately Aug. 1 per minutes — the road will be rough and a temporary speed limit of 35 mph will be in place because of soft subgrade conditions.
