Board adopts zoning changes tightening screening rules for tow lots and junkyards

The Amelia County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 27 to adopt amendments to the county's zoning ordinance that revise screening and administrative provisions for tow lots, salvage yards and junkyards.
Community Development staff reviewed the changes, which reorganize provisions within the ordinance and add updated screening requirements. Existing tow lots that have been in continuous operation for at least two years may comply with the new screening standards by July 1, 2028, under the adopted language. Staff emphasized the change is administrative and does not alter the zoning districts in which these uses are permitted; significant expansions or operations outside permitted districts would require a Special Exception Permit or a zoning amendment.
Supervisor Todd Robinson moved for adoption; the motion carried unanimously. County staff will incorporate the ordinance text changes into the official zoning code and advise property owners of compliance timelines.
