Enable Movement Foundation outlines adaptive cycling program for people with disabilities

Julie Brown, founder of the Enable Movement Foundation, told attendees she started the nonprofit to give people with disabilities the same recreational opportunities as others. "My dream was to have this foundation where the disabled have the same opportunities as we do," Brown said, noting she is a physical therapist by training and that the organization runs community programs for people with disabilities.

Brown described the group's signature adaptive cycling offering, called the cruising cyclist program, which operates on five different trails in the area and provides both equipment and hands-on support for riders. She said the program accommodates riders "any age, any level of disability," and that participants who cannot pedal still benefit from the sensory experience while those who can pedal are encouraged to do so.

Brown emphasized both safety and the potential health and social benefits of participation. "All of our team is here, and we're always right there with the clients," she said, explaining volunteers and staff help secure equipment and assist nonverbal participants. She cited outcomes she has observed, including instances where autistic riders who were nonverbal became verbal while participating. The foundation also documents rides with helmet cameras and manages participant paperwork and hydration on outings.
