CCASD board reviews proposed 2024–25 Instructional Time Model including remote and project-based options

The Governing Board of the Coconino County Accommodation School District met Sept. 4, 2024, in Flagstaff for the second of two public hearings on a proposed Instructional Time Model (ITM) for the 2024–25 school year. Chief Education Officer Dave Dirksen outlined two primary components of the model and said the district would include its online instruction option when submitting the ITM to the state.

Dirksen said the plan would allow remote learning "through Canvas, Zoom, and other tools to access their daily learning" and described a separate project-based learning option supervised by a teacher that would total at least 60 hours of learning. "He reiterated the discussion from the last meeting regarding implementing remote learning that would allow students to attend remotely through Canvas, Zoom, and other tools to access their daily learning," Dirksen said. He added that CCASD online instruction would be included in the ITM submission so the district would have the option to use it.

The hearing served as a public step required before the district finalizes the ITM for state submission; no vote or formal action is recorded in the minutes. President Cheryl Mango-Paget called the session to order at 9:21 a.m. and adjourned it at 9:27 a.m. The minutes list additional attendees and staff present, including Erin Tutay, Director of Business Services, and virtual participant Traci Parker, principal of Tse'Yaato' High School. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 2, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

The proposed changes — expanding remote attendance options and adding a 60-hour supervised project requirement — would alter how instructional time is logged and delivered for CCASD students if the district proceeds and the state approves the ITM. District officials indicated the item remains under consideration and will be submitted to the state with CCASD's online instruction option included.
