Harvey County to seek longer FEMA comment period, schedules work session on flood maps

Commissioner Becky Reimer asked the Harvey County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 7 to request that FEMA extend the public comment period on the agency's draft Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for unincorporated areas from 30 days to 90 days and to schedule a work session to prepare community comments. The board agreed and directed staff to request an extension and convene a work session.
Planning, Zoning & Environmental Director Karen Rothe told the board she will contact FEMA to request the extension and said the LIDAR and historical data used to produce the proposed maps "is better and more accurate than methods previously used to create flood maps." The commission set a work session on Oct. 15 at 9 a.m. to review the county's response and scheduled a separate strategic-plan session on Oct. 30.
County Administrator Kevin Frymire also noted FEMA had issued a notice regarding community official submissions for the draft maps. No substantive map changes or formal comments were adopted at the Oct. 7 meeting; staff will present recommended comment language at the Oct. 15 work session.
