DeKalb elections director reports 572,547 registered voters, outstanding applications and budget status

DeKalb County elections staff reported registration and operational metrics to the board and outlined preparations for an Aug. 25 runoff and an upcoming post-election audit.
Director Dorothy Smith told the board that as of July 31 the county had 572,547 registered voters: 501,106 active and 71,441 inactive. Staff reported 11,208 outstanding applications awaiting processing (9,816 from Department of Driver Services, 141 online, 338 from the My Voter page and 913 handwritten applications) and 205 pieces of returned mail. Smith said the office is aware some third parties mailed unsolicited registration applications and staff will follow up when appropriate.
Smith also described logistics for the risk-limiting audit and ballot-image audit scheduled for Thursday and said the warehouse team is reconciling equipment for the Aug. 25 runoff. On budget, Smith reported a remaining balance of $8,709,867.25 and said the department does not currently anticipate overruns for temporary salaries but would request additional funds if unavoidable.
