Treasurer-elect asks Harvey County commissioners to allow earlier start after incumbent injury

Amy Perkins, Harvey County treasurer-elect, told the board on Sept. 23 that she recently learned the current treasurer, Becky Fields, sustained an injury "that will cause her to be absent for most of the remainder of her term." Perkins said she is slated to begin her elected term on Oct. 13 but asked the commission to consider allowing her to begin earlier to operate the office.
County Administrator Kevin Frymire told the commission that a transitional audit of the Treasurer's office is scheduled for Oct. 10 and Oct. 14, dates that coincide with the end of Fields' current term and the start of Perkins' elected term. Perkins acknowledged that having both the incumbent and the treasurer-elect on payroll during any overlap could require additional expense; the board asked the County Counselor to advise on legal and payroll implications before any personnel or payroll change is implemented.
Commissioners did not adopt a formal change at the meeting. The board recorded the request and directed staff to seek legal guidance; no date was set for a decision. The audit dates remain Oct. 10 and Oct. 14 as part of the transition process.
