"The winners are, of course, chestnuts on Highland ... The 2nd winner are the Redwoods by Coaches Field ... 3rd is the California buckeyes in Houston Park ... and last but not least is the crepe myrtle on Wildwood," Kimberly Moses read from the slide deck summarizing the committee's selections. The commission moved and seconded a motion to accept the four recommendations and voted to approve them.
Commissioners and staff discussed whether recently planted specimens should wait to be considered heritage trees, with some members saying age and establishment in the ground factor into the committee's deliberations. The commission also thanked nominators and noted winners will receive recognition pins and markers to be installed ahead of the Arbor Day celebration.
