Council OKs $1.48 million design-build contract for new wastewater and streets shop buildings

City Engineer Andrew Lakey told the council the streets and wastewater departments urgently need larger shop buildings to house commercial-sized vehicles and to eliminate the need for leased storage. Lakey said local contractors helped scope the project and that Kinsman Construction's proposal offered cost-saving ideas and a straightforward approach. "These buildings are desperately needed for both wastewater and the streets department," Lakey said.
The council moved and approved a design-build contract with Kinsman Construction LLC for a not-to-exceed amount of $1,477,450 and authorized a contingency allowance of $221,618. Council members asked about site placement in relation to potential future treatment-plant expansion; Lakey said wastewater staff were heavily involved in siting decisions and staff believe the selected locations accommodate foreseeable future needs.
The contract authorization allows the city to proceed with design and construction procurement with the selected contractor; council approval included authority for the city manager to execute the agreement.
