The Sheridan County Board of County Commissioners convened a special budget meeting on May 19 to begin review of the 2026–27 departmental budgets. The meeting focused on operational and capital requests across several departments; commissioners consistently approved budgets "excluding salaries and benefits" to allow more time to reconcile payroll formulas and possible cost-of-living adjustments.
Commissioners emphasized that pay and benefit decisions would be addressed after staff reconciles spreadsheet errors and after state-level salary decisions are clearer. Chair (speaker 2) opened the meeting noting, "This is our special meeting for May 19," and the board repeatedly accepted departmental operating budgets on the condition that salaries and benefits would be resolved during the next round of meetings. The session ran through detailed presentations by public works, the county clerk on elections costs, public health, emergency management, the coroner, the sheriff's office and other departments. The board recessed and scheduled follow-up budget sessions in early June and a cap‑tax review the next day.
