Board hears road-maintenance updates and funding options for unpaved roads

Brooks said crews are nearly finished with shoulder cutting on Route 616 and are preparing to hard-surface Oslo Lane (Route 672) with construction expected to begin in July. He detailed the two primary funding sources: telecommunication fees charged to utility providers and a district grant for unpaved roads proportioned by the county's share of unpaved mileage. "It looks like Amelia gets about $50 per year, in the tele fee and about 30 some in the unpaid road. So 80, give or take, each year," Brooks said; the transcript does not record units (staff later indicated these are annual funding allocations to the county under the state formula).
Brooks also described a request to transfer unallocated dollars (a holding UPC balance) into the Obslow project to show the estimate whole so construction can proceed; staff said the shortfall appears to be roughly $7,000 in the current cost estimate but that contingencies may return unused funds to the balance account after completion. Board members asked for a spreadsheet of unpaved-road miles and eligibility, and staff agreed to provide the data and follow up by email.
