Superintendent Brenda Donahue told the board she is tracking state legislation that could affect district finances and operations. She said one House bill that would permit support staff to draw unemployment during breaks and the summer could impose a significant cost on the district: "it could cost the district for about 12 weeks, approximately $250,000." Donahue said trustees should monitor the measure as it moves through the legislature.
Donahue also noted a separate bill under consideration that would ban student cellphones in schools; she reported the board and staff are watching how both measures progress so they can assess budgetary and operational impacts. No formal board action was taken at the March 19 meeting.
