Parowan planning commission recommends narrow permit exemption for simple re-roofs

The Parowan City Planning and Zoning Commission on July 15 unanimously voted to recommend that the City Council amend PCMC 10.01.020 so homeowners replacing or repairing roofing materials would not need a building permit provided no structural changes are made and no more than two layers of asphalt shingles remain upon completion. City Manager Dan Jessen presented the proposed language and opened a public hearing; with no members of the public present the hearing was opened and closed at 6:04 PM.
Commissioners emphasized the exemption would not apply to work involving roof framing, trusses, rafters, changes to roof geometry or any other work otherwise requiring a building permit. The motion to recommend the amendment was made by Andy Nelson and seconded by Jerry Vesely; the motion carried unanimously. The recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for its consideration.
