Piedmont council adopts Civic Center parking plan after weeks of study

The Piedmont City Council voted to adopt a reconfigured Civic Center parking plan on May 5, 2025, approving a set of sign and use changes designed to increase short-term parking near the new community pool and redistribute employee parking into adjacent blocks. The plan, as amended by council, converts several employee-designated spaces on Bonita into short-term spaces, designates several previously undesignated Hillside spots for employee parking, and adds short-duration drop-off spaces for preschool/kindergarten parents.
Public Works Director Gonzales told the council that the staff proposal produces a net increase in short-term parking locally and that staff had identified “36 new time-limited parking spaces” in the configurations presented. Gonzales emphasized safety and accessibility in the design and said staff had identified 13 ADA-compliant spaces and four EV charging spaces in the civic center area. Mayor Betsy Smigel Anderson summarized council direction after the vote, and staff said they would notify affected residents and coordinate with Piedmont Unified School District (PUSD) on communications and staging. The council also agreed to revisit the plan in about a year to assess performance and make adjustments if needed.
