Public Works Director Jack Eklund said the action is largely procedural: those streets are already on the federal classification map but had not been adopted in the city's municipal code. Streets identified include 24th Street (Regence to 70th), a portion of 37th Street (Bridgeport to Sunset), Drexler Drive between 35th and 40th, Larson Lane between 35th and Marketplace, and Marketplace in front of the shopping center. Eklund said adopting the streets locally closes an administrative loop and supports future grant applications but that some unopened sections currently remain designated for pedestrian connection rather than roadway.
Council members asked how local classification interacts with state highway designations and whether reclassification to principal arterial would yield grant advantages; Eklund said benefits depend on the grant program and that staff will collect updated traffic counts this fall to assess potential reclassification needs.
