Peekskill honors three community leaders for Women's History Month

Mayor Vivian McKenzie opened the March 24 meeting by recognizing Women’s History Month and introducing poet Nina Bellan Robbins, who read a short poem celebrating generational strength. The mayor then presented formal proclamations honoring three local women for service to Peekskill: Jacqueline Simpkins, Carol Vossy and Sandra Walton.
McKenzie read details of each honoree’s contribution. The proclamation said Jacqueline Simpkins “brought her compassion and patience to help educate children with special needs,” described her work at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church and noted her role on the Peekskill Housing Authority board and in running a food distribution site that serves about 150 households. Carol Vossy was recognized for leadership as executive director of the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce and for organizing an annual event celebrating women-owned businesses. Sandra Walton was cited for volunteer work with the Peekskill City School District parent-teacher organization and ongoing youth-development efforts. After each proclamation the honorees expressed gratitude; Nina Bellan Robbins’ poem included the line, “You are a beautiful woman,” which drew applause.
The mayor invited honorees and the poet to be photographed and offered light refreshments before the council resumed business.
