Avon commission approves Firefighter/Paramedic entrance exam; test set for June 6

The Avon Civil Service Commission voted unanimously May 4 to approve administering a Firefighter/Paramedic entrance exam on Saturday, June 6, 2026, to create a new eligible hiring list. Fire Chief David Swope told commissioners the list on record has expired and the department currently has a vacancy; the commission approved the exam by a 3-0 vote.
Chief Swope said applicants must have completed an agility test, hold a certified Firefighter II credential and be a registered paramedic at the time of appointment. The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association is scheduled to administer the written exam; Chief Swope asked that the commission consider a special meeting the week following the test to certify results so the department can start the hiring process. Law Director John Gasior noted meetings require at least 24 hours' notice and staff availability will shape scheduling. The commission took no further action pending receipt and review of the exam results.
