Board approves heat-safety policy and advances AB 495 parent-notification rules

Superintendent Dr. Fuentes explained the district is adopting Board Policy 5141.75 to align with new California Department of Education guidance about heat and weather safety that takes effect July 1. He noted the policy change follows a fatal heat-exhaustion incident at another district: "that student experienced significant heat exhaustion and unfortunately died as a result of that," he said, explaining the need for clearer communication and guidance for K–8 settings.
The board also reviewed revisions to BP 5145.6 about parent and guardian notification tied to AB 495. Dr. Fuentes said notifications vary by incident: site-specific alerts when immigration officers enter a school office, or districtwide messages when vehicles are seen near multiple sites; trustees clarified the district would provide red cards and yellow cards with rapid-response numbers and that notifications should be equitable and site-appropriate.
Trustees moved and approved BP 5141.75 and advanced BP 5145.6 and related exhibits for first reading as required by the new statutes.
