AAUW representative urges district to use state period-poverty toolkit

Peg Carlson Bowen of the American Association of University Women’s San Jose branch addressed the board during public comment to mark Period Poverty Awareness Week (May 11–17) and to highlight a state implementation toolkit for menstrual equity.
Carlson Bowen described health and attendance impacts associated with lack of access to period products and noted that a statewide law requires free products from grades 3–12. She said the toolkit includes an implementation roadmap, a model board policy, reimbursement options and case studies and that she had left a printed copy for district staff.
The board thanked Carlson Bowen for bringing the resources to their attention; trustees and staff said they would follow up on how the district references and implements the toolkit in site policies and practices.
